Things That Make Me Say NO

Via astute reader Jessica, we have this: man leggings are the new Must Have for fall 2007.

Yes, really! Fashion writer Godfrey Deeny claims to “know a lot of guys who wear leggings around the home to watch DVDs, lounge around before Premiership games or surf the Internet.” Deeny’s question is, can the man legging move from loungewear to barwear?

Dear god, I hope not.

I’m all in favor of the guys making an effort to be a little more stylish, but I’m having a hard time wrapping my head around this particular style trend. Maybe that’s because my husband is 6’5″ and all I can see when I try to picture him in leggings is the Jolly Green Giant.

Jolly Green Giant

What say you–does this deserve a hearty HO HO HO, or will the man in your life be sporting a pair of leggings come fall?

  1. My husband just mentioned this last night and wanted to know what self-respecting man would wear leggings. I said I thought they were better than “manpris.” He said he would ‘t wear those either. I told him he wasn’t very stylish according to the “fashion experts” out there. He seemed okay with that. Hee.

  2. Oh, manpris! No to those, too.

Also to man clogs and Crocs on grown men. Or grown people in general.

  3. nooooo to the man-leggings!
(but crocs as essential on the boat!)

  4. Crocs on the boat are fine. Just LEAVE them ON THE BOAT.

  5. Uh! NO!!
I didnt know that men wore leggings as loungewear, so all this is news to me. I dont think my husband would be taken seriously if he showed up anywhere wearing leggings or manpris. Besides, I dont think he has the body for it, but neither did the model I saw.
Thanks, now I am going to have nightmares of business men in leggings running the world. Yikes!

  6. Wendy, imagine George Bush in some man leggings.

    You’re welcome!

  7. OMG…man leggings…say it isn’t so. They aren’t all that attractive on most women, so why would anyone decide to put them on men? So many bad thoughts running through my head…make it stop!

  8. I just gouged out my eyes with a melon-baller lest I see this atrocity. I’m not sure I can complete this day, knowing what I do now. Why do I have to know this! Make it stop! I’m going back to bed.

  9. p.s. GWB in a leggings with legwarmers: that will be his punishment…for everything.

  10. I spy! With my reasonable-sized-nicely-colored eye! Knees! Ankles! Privates! Those should be kept private, not tightly dressed for full display! We are not at the Swan Lake here, Marni! Bad designer, no lycra!

  11. I say no manpris, no leggings. Yuck! The only time men should ever be wearing anything that tight below the belt should be when they are wearing thermals under skipants or a wetsuit for a day on the water.

  12. I say unless said man can dance the Nutcracker and is, in fact, at that moment dancing the Nutcracker, he should not be wearing tights, leggings or anything closely related.

(Resisting the strong urge to “crack” jokes about nutcrackers and, thanks to Kate, melon-ballers in response to a post about menswear that shows off their…well, you know.)

  13. OMG, I am horrified at the thought of men in leggings, or tights.

My husband would never wear them.

  14. Come on, sing it with me….

We’re men, we’re men in tights.
We roam around the forest looking for fights.
We’re men, we’re men in tights.
We rob from the rich and give to the poor, that’s right!

  15. I’m a 23 year old metrosexual male. I personally think leggings are a wonderful concept at that! I think females need to stop whining and feeling akward about men who want to wear leggings! “Gender is nothing more than a physical construct.” It has nothing to do with what sex they are. Both men and women can and do actually percieve the world in similar ways. A man doesn’t always like to wear heavy, thick and dark apparel. We too enjoy the luxuries of lfe like silk and nylon. Clearly a man that is well built and assertive like most men, but perhaps is better groomed and enjoys wearing leggings doesn’t mean he is any less of a man. A man or woman is determined based on how kind, helpful and positive we are toward others, not what we eat, wear, sleep in, or how we act like outside of these pathetic gender roles created my society that something thought up as being the ONLY way. It simply doesn’t work that way. Individuals are very complex living beings with mixed emotions, new developing feelings about ourselves and others, and our own need to be distinctive among others. In conclusion, open-mindedness and the ability to let change occur is not a punishment but a gift to express oneself and enjoy life on higher and newer levels. Judge not another and they won’t judge you!

Now for all the men out there. Give it a try if you choose. Fear of rejection means you are dependent on what others think and want of you.

I’ve been wearing leggings for about 6 years now. I find them to be very comfortable. I go shopping in them, I wear them around the apartment. I would never go to work in them.

  17. I had a seamstress customize a pair of leggings for me. she added a fabric covered sleeve to add comfort and to clearly show that these aren’t your average girly-girl leggings. They are so comfortable I wear them around the house all the time and sometimes under my favorite skinny jeans.

  18. Hi there. I am in almost emergency situation. I am going into the army!!! I need to start a checking account that will give me an ATM card right away. Where should I go? Is

  19. Leggings for men is not a new trend – one that’s been around for years. It’s time to get over the body image constraints and go for the comfort. Just wear them. Leggings are perfect casual wear for women AND men. Having worn leggings for years, I’m aware of people’s comments both negative and very positive. After all, it’s not the leggings on the man but the man in the leggings. Everyone looks good in leggings and some people look great!
If more people, women and men, wear leggings then it will just be another apparel choice. At one time denim jeans were worn only by miners digging for gold. Now they are everywhere.
So never say never – when you do decide to wear leggings, choose a well made pair – not with cotton fibers that bag out over time but a high tech fiber that retains its shape. Go for the comfort and support. Leggings that go to the ankle look better than capri style that chop the leg. Plus the full length leggings support you from your ankle to your waist and give you an energetic lift. Laugh, Live, Love & Enjoy! Check out http://www.UnJeans.com
